In France, it is traditionally used in the symptomatic treatment of nervous disorders in adults and children, especially for mild sleep disorders and for the symptomatic treatment of coughs. Furthermore, Horehound enemas are used against ascaridae and suppositions, on the basis of the thickened fresh plant juice, which acts against oxyurene. Externally, Horehound is used for gout.

In addition to the lethargy that characterizes candidiasis, both chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia also cause arthritis-like pain and sleep disorders. In fact, these disorders have so much in common that many physicians and researchers believe they are, in fact, part of a single syndrome sometimes referred to as dysregulation spectrum syndrome (DSS) or central sensitivity syndrome (CSS).
Also related to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are hypothyroidism, chemical sensitivities, irritable bowel, and other chronic pain conditions. And according to Dr. |

Dedicated to "improving public health and safety by achieving understanding of sleep and sleep disorders," the foundation was formed in 1991 by a group of sleep researchers, one of whom had lost a son who had fallen asleep at the wheel of his car. At that time, Gelula said, researchers were just beginning to piece together the biological and psychological importance of sleep. While most people were undoubtedly aware that getting a good night's sleep is important, the researchers believed that more and more Americans were ignoring the need for shut-eye. |

While there are literally dozens of clinically diagnosed sleep disorders, we'll concentrate on the ones that are most disruptive.
Insomnia: You know it as toss-and-turn disease. No matter what you do or try, you lie in bed, stewing like a Crock-Pot of Swedish meatballs. Technically, insomnia is defined as either not being able to get to sleep in the first place or not being able to get back to sleep after waking up. Unbelievably, people over the age of sixty-five have an average of twenty-five awakenings a night, and that number increases with age. |
| The good thing, however, is that 50 percent of people with sleep disorders can be helped by simple behavioral changes
Humans die faster without sleep than they do without food. But the truth is that even people who don't think they sleep at all usually get two to four hours of rest a night. that you make by yourself—to your bed, to your body, and to your life.
Interestingly, sleep is your body's default state; you're supposed to be in a sleep state all the time (see Figure 9.2). The way you fall asleep is through the activation of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA. |

More and more Americans are taking medications to help them fall asleep. Spending on drugs to treat insomnia and related disorders surged by 20% last year, according to Medco Health Solutions.
Insomnia is defined as trouble falling asleep or staying asleep for three or more nights per week for one month or longer, accompanied by daytime fatigue.
Don't let insomnia go on for days, weeks or months. |
| Silber, codirector of the Mayo Clinic's sleep disorders Center, and president of the AASM, who has studied the phenomenon of Ambien-linked binge sleep-eating, says, "There's little doubt in my mind or those of my colleagues that Ambien can do this. I don't think it's common; I think it's a very small minority of patients who use Ambien who do this."
In sleep-eating, individuals gain weight after repeated bingeing at night, with no recollection of it when they awake. "We've had patients who, as soon as they started using Ambien, started sleep-eating," Silber says. |
| THE NUMBERS
"It may seem like there's an explosion of these cases, but when you've got 26 million prescriptions written and just 48 cases reported to the US Food and Drug Administration [FDA]—most of which involved inappropriate use of the medication—the numbers are extremely small," says Donna Arand, clinical director of the Kettering sleep disorders Center in Dayton, Ohio, and a spokeswoman for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
These figures are from the FDA's adverse events reporting database, which has tracked patient reports of medication-associated sleepwalking since 1997. |

Taurine for Bloat and Water Retention
IN A MINUTE, I'm going to tell you how good taurine is for the heart (and for arrhythmias). But first let me just pass on a little folk wisdom to you. If you've got PMS— and especially if you feel bloated—think taurine.
One of the most popular products on my website is a product by the wonderful vitamin company Designs for Health called Water Ease. Water Ease is 700 mg of taurine, with a little B6 thrown in for good measure. |

My associate, nutritionist Suzanne Copp, M.S., points out that it's not the high doses of B6 that are a problem, but rather, giving a single B vitamin without preparing the body with a foundation dose of all the other B vitamins. |

At this early point in its use, phytoplankton appear to provide all the basic nutrients required by the cells of the body in a whole and natural unprocessed food form. |

This condition can be diagnosed by subjecting you to a "sleep study" at a licensed clinic specializing in sleep disorders.
And here is the really good news; your insurance will pay the doctors for this test, which (surprise) almost always proves that you have the problem. In addition, once diagnosed, the treatment involves an expensive conttaption that you must wear all night. The apparatus ensures that your brain receives adequate levels of oxygen. The good news here, of course, is that your insurance will usually pay for this treatment as well. |

Sleep-Disturbed Breathing
The last group of sleep disorders is the most common. Sleep-disturbed breathing occurs in up to 20 percent of the population. Its worst form is sleep apnea, an illness primarily of overweight, middle-aged men. Women are, in fact, protected from sleep apnea while they are menstruating. But after the age of fifty, with the loss of the protective reproductive hormones and the resulting gain in weight, rates in women approach those in men. |
| Many people with sleep disorders complain of fatigue but not always of sleepiness. Although fatigue and sleepiness often overlap, they don't have to. For example, many of my CFS patients are extremely fatigued but also have major problems falling asleep. So they are fatigued but not sleepy. Sorting out similarities and differences between fatigue and sleepiness is the subject of a research project I'm currently conducting with Dr. Alexandros Vgontzas, a sleep researcher at Pennsylvania State University medical school. |

While many studies (including my own) find that sleep disorders occur no more often in patients with medically unexplained symptoms than in the general population, one sleep specialist at the medical school in Stony Brook, New York, has reported a mild form of sleep apnea to be common in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). One reason for the apparent discrepancy is that most sleep studies report on small numbers of patients. |
| For example, the successful outcome of a study on pharmacological doses of 5-HTP, one of the building blocks (the scientific word for this is substrate) for serotonin, the brain-active substance involved in sleep and pain indicates that some FM patients have sleep disorders. Several recent studies show that disturbing sleep in healthy people can lead to increases in musculoskeletal achiness and/or decreases in their pain threshold. To me, this means that some patients have a problem with sleep that adds up over time to produce the syndrome of FM. |
